If you wish to camp anywhere in the park, other than in developed campgrounds on the North Rim, South Rim, or Tuweep, you must obtain a permit from the Backcountry Information Center.

The earlier you plan your camping trip and apply for permits, the more likely you will be to get the dates and locations you want. You can apply for a permit as early as four months prior to the start of your trip.

You will be camping in a desert climate, where water and protection from the elements make the difference between life and death. Your trip begins at 7000-8000 feet and starts with a bone-jarring descent and a heavy pack. Then, your trip will end with a long, tough climb out of the canyon.

If you are interested in guided backcountry camping trips, contact one of the Hiking & Camping Guide Companies (see links above).

Overnight camping in the canyon and in undeveloped areas along the rim is carefully monitored and controlled, and demand usually exceeds availability. Therefore, it is recommended that you plan your trip well in advance. And try to be flexibile on dates and camping spots. Make your request for a backcounty camping permit as early as possible.
